Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica

Biennial clary sage is an excellent choice for an Old World garden. Historically used as an eyewash and to flavor food and wine, clary sage has been used by us humans for a long time. Notes of citrus and pine erupt from the bruised leaves and flowers.

Even in a modern landscape garden, clary sage offers unique architectural spires of showy flowers. We're surprised that we don't come across this herbal heirloom in our travels more often. It certainly deserves a spot in the garden.
